Bowled over at Budmarsh

A visitor's Budmarsh experience

I went to Budmarsh Lodge in the Magaliesberg to compile a bird list, but was bowled over not just by the birds, but also by the lodge’s location, its 5-star luxury accommodation, and most of all, by its food.

The beautiful view from the lodge

This is some of the very best food I have eaten anywhere in South Africa, prepared lovingly by the brilliant young English chef, Chris Tustian. Before coming out to Budmarsh, with Annetjie his partner, who runs the lodge, Chris had cooked around England and also for three years in France.

His food has a decided French flair, which he applies to everything from fresh fish and prawns, to springbok and lamb. His home-grown herb garden is his special pride and joy.

Go there and taste for yourself. Sunday lunch, or a picnic on the lawns overlooking the trout dam are memorable.

By the way, there are over 400 species of birds in the Magaliesberg area, and in a day and a half, my 17-year-old grandson, Stephen, and I, spotted 31 in the lodge grounds.
